Budgeting: How to Estimate the Cost of Your Digital Accessibility Project

Need to budget for your digital accessibility project? The Accessible.org Cost Calculator makes it easy to get an accurate estimates in seconds. Here’s how to use it.

Using the Cost Calculator

Once you’re inside the calculator, you’ll see sections for different services: accessibility audits, VPAT services, remediation, user testing, and more.

Because most projects involve an audit, let’s start there.

Step 1: Enter Your Pages or Screens Complexity

In the accessibility audit section, categorize your pages:

  • Light pages: Simple content pages with minimal interaction
  • Medium pages: Pages with forms or some dynamic elements
  • Complex pages: Heavy interaction, custom components

For example, if your website has 2 light pages, 2 medium pages, and 1 complex page, enter those numbers into the calculator.

Step 2: Choose Your Standards and Environments

The base calculation gives you an audit price for WCAG 2.1 AA standard with desktop environment. You can:

  • Add mobile environment (recommended for most projects)
  • Upgrade to WCAG 2.2 AA for the latest standard

Click “Recalculate” after each change to see updated pricing.

Step 3: Add Additional Services

Depending on your needs, you might want to add other services:

VPAT Service

If you need WCAG, Section 508, EN 301 549, INT editions, select these options.

Technical Support Hours

Add as many hours of technical support as you deem necessary. Keep in mind that if you want certification, a conformance statement, or to fix issues before we issue an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR), we’ll need some technical support hours (we use them to validate).

User Testing

If you’d like feedback from actual users with disabilities and/or evidence that your digital asset has been user tested, select user testing.

Remediation Services

If you’d like our help making fixes, you can add this cost to your estimate.

Example Budget Calculation

Let’s walk through a real example:

Starting Point:

  • 2 light pages, 2 medium pages, 1 complex page
  • WCAG 2.1 AA desktop only
  • Estimated cost: $900

Adding Mobile and Latest Standards:

  • Same pages
  • Add mobile environment
  • Upgrade to WCAG 2.2 AA
  • New estimate: $1,260

Complete Project Package:

  • Same as above
  • Add Section 508 VPAT service
  • Add 2 hours technical support
  • Total project estimate: $2,576

Quick Tips for Budgeting

  1. Count all your pages and categorize them honestly
  2. Don’t forget mobile if your asset is accessed by mobile devices
  3. Factor in VPAT service if you own/operate a product or service and need documentation
  4. Budget for at least 2 hours of technical support
