Lately we’ve received WCAG audit requests from Shopify store owners with fewer complex pages. In terms of primary customer flow, the most involved screens/pages are:
- homepage
- collections page
- product page
- checkout screen
Other than that, we’re looking at simpler layouts with less interactive elements. For example:
- login page
- contact page
- blog page
- blog post page
While we usually recite that audits typically range between $2,500 and $7,500, for these simpler, more straightforward Shopify sites, client quotes are ranging between $1,500 and $2,500 – and this is for a WCAG 2.1 AA desktop + mobile audit.
The reason?
There’s less work so it takes us less time.
Of course, most of our Shopify clients are understandably concerned with website accessibility litigation and thus want to make sure their website would be considered ADA compliant so they avoid any lawsuits.
The best practice for ADA compliance is still WCAG 2.1 AA conformance, but there’s always the option to opt for WCAG 2.2 AA. The difference is WCAG 2.2 AA has six additional success criteria (technical requirements) so there are potentially more accessibility issues to fix. And, cost-wise, going with the 2.2 standard will cost about 10% more.
When it comes to remediation, our clients usually have their own developer so most take the fixes in-house and then purchase 2-3 hours of technical support from us to answer any questions and validate the fixes to ensure the issue is resolved. But, we can provide code and content remediation so we can flex into the all-in-one accessibility service shop role.
What’s especially nice to see is more and more clients are contacting us before they’ve been sued. For years, our clients overwhelmingly had already been sued when the ordered an audit. Now, it’s much more of a mix; Shopify store owners have been ravaged by lawsuits so word has spread amongst the community.
