Automating VPAT generation is one of the new features we’re working on for Accessibility Tracker.
Accessibility Tracker is an audit-based platform which means all of the features are based on your audit report. For example, your analytics and progress reports are accurate because you’re working from complete information (as opposed to scan results).
This matters because conducting an audit report is a prerequisite to filling in a VPAT — you must have complete information to complete the accessibility table.
And there’s no requirement that your digital asset be fully conformant with WCAG or any other technical standard, the only requirement is that the VPAT be completely and accurately filled in.
But, here’s the hard part: you can’t simply copy and paste the audit report or the current status of the issues into a VPAT.
Even if you were to only generate a WCAG edition of the VPAT, you still need to fill in the remarks and explanations column, at the very minimum, for issues where the product or service does not support or partially supports the criterion.
Can we have AI interpret the data and fill in the remarks and explanations column?
Yes, of course, but we’ll have to fine-tune or train an LLM to get to the point where the remarks and explanations information is reliably outputting accurately.
Also, once this app is complete inside of Accessibility Tracker, it won’t automatically create a VPAT / ACR that you can email to a procurement agent — you’ll still need to review for accuracy.
This leads to a concept we refer to as hybrid automation.
Hybrid automation is where we can automate some or all of a process through AI or coded rulesets, but the resulting output must be reviewed manually before the output is able to be used in a commercial or professional setting.
In this scenario, the use case is organizations who are using Accessibility Tracker for their own products and services and generating their own VPATs once they’ve reached WCAG full conformance and/or are satisfied with the state of accessibility.
